Is this product curly hair friendly? Part3 – Reading labels

Hi Lovelies. Reading labels to see if a product is curly hair friendly, can be time consuming and confusing but it does become second nature and easier to do. Its good to know what to look for as some brands are notorious for changing their formula and adding in baddies, do not assume because a product was Curly Hair friendly that it still is, ALWAYS read the label

When you take the plunge the products that you use must not contain:

1. Silicones  silicone forms a kind of plastic film around the hair shaft, locking in moisture;

Dimethicone
Bis-aminopropyl dimethicone
Cetearyl methicone
Cetyl Dimethicone
Cyclopentasiloxane
Stearoxy Dimethicone
Stearyl Dimethicone
Trimethylsilylamodimethicone
Amodimethicone
Dimethicone
Dimethiconol
Behenoxy Dimethicone
Phenyl trimethicone
*silicones end in -one, -conol, or -xane
If a silicone has “PEG” or “PPG”(or higher) in front of the silicone its probably water soluble

2 Sulphates – sulfates strips the hair of its natural oils

Alkylbenzene sulfonates
Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate
Ammonium laureth sulfate
Ammonium lauryl sulfate
Ammonium Xylenesulfonate
Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate
Sodium cocoyl sarcosinate
Sodium laureth sulfate
Sodium lauryl sulfate
Sodium lauryl sulfoacetate
Sodium myreth sulfate
Sodium Xylenesulfonate
TEA-dodecylbenzenesulfonate
Ethyl PEG-15 cocamine sulfate
Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate
** sulfates are ingredients that contain sulfate or sulfonate

3. Alcohol – drying alcohols often contain propyl, prop, eth, or denatured in the name-

Denatured alcohol
SD alcohol 40
DS alcohol
Witch hazel
Isopropanol
Ethanol alcohol
Ethyl alcohol
SD alcohol
Propanol
Propyl alcohol
Isopropyl alcohol
Amyl Cinnamyl alcohol
***Not all alcohols are bad for curls. There are moisturizing alcohols in ingredient lists that are good for hair such as
Behenyl alcohol
Cetearyl alcohol
Cetyl alcohol
Isocetyl alcohol
Isostearyl alcohol
Lauryl alcohol
Myristyl alcohol
Stearyl alcohol
C30-50 Alcohols
Lanolin alcohol

4.Wax – wax is the same as silicone

bees wax, candelilla wax, flower wax, lanolin
****waxes contain the word wax

5. Mineral oil – mineral oil forms a coating on hair

Paraffinum liquidum
Petrolatum

#Parabeans are a personal choice, its water soluble but many prefer not to use it because its linked to causing cancer
