I recently had the pleasure to be invited to the re-launch BLK/OPL Cosmetics (Black Opal)
Not only was I excited to be a part of the event it was also the first time meeting Charnelle Avontuur, the mastermind behind Beauty Swop or Sale South Africa <3
This brand has been in existence since 1994, they saw a niche market for women of colour that were struggling to find cosmetics that actually caters to their skintones and undertones.
Choosing a foundation, that actually matches women of colour is such a struggle. Many brands either do not cater for us at all or the undertones are completely off! We are not orange oompa lompas!!
We received a beautiful goodie bag containing 3 different types of foundations and a matte lipstick. Their packaging has been completely revamped and modernized. Its more edgy and bold which translates better to the younger customers while still not neglecting their loyal consumers, I’m such a sucker for packaging really. It will be hitting Clicks, Foschini and Edgars stands in MayI love the sleek, square compacts in different colours to distinguish between the different formulas-no more grabbing the wrong formula, transparent lids makes it easier to see the actual shade. What’s not to like about a brand that actually listens and caters to consumer feedback.
A bigger mirror has been added for our convenience, much better to do touch ups on the go
Air vents to prevent the sponge application from getting all janky and gross

The other great products on offer is the BLK/OPL TRUE COLOR stick foundation
SPF15, that can be used for contour and highlight as well as a concealer
Their Invisible oil blocking powder is a translucent powder that absorbs oil and keeps makeup in place for a good couple of hours before you’ll need any touch ups
I tried Truly Topaz which was the lightest shade we got but it was to dark for me, but what I did notice is that the coverage is amazing even though it is medium buildable I had to use a light hand, if did not become cakey when I set it with powder. The liquid and cream products are more suited for dry skin, I did notice it becoming oily after about 3 hours. The powder foundation is good for combination and oily skin I found I had to powder less than I usual when my skin started getting oily
I used one of the cream foundations as a contour shade and its perfect, no muddy orangey brown stripe
I’m a hoarder of lipsticks even though I basically wear and buy the SAME shades all the time! The lipsticks are quite long lasting, its matte without being drying, application is smooth without being waxy. No tugging, it only took one swipe to see the beautiful colour pay off. Misfit is the perfect brown for me it doesn’t have that dreaded pink undertone or makes my look like a 90’s club kid. Its also scented but the scent is not over powering (I’m sensitive to smells) and does not take linger long after application
Overall I would definitely recommend the foundations for medium-dark skinned women who has yellow/orange undertones. The lipstick shades really do cater to every skin tone. Its affordable without sacrificing quality or longevity, I compared the opacity of the foundation to my high end brands and its actually better! I’m heading out to buy the correct shade, as well as the oil blocking powder soon soon <3
